JR: Chronicles
|
Portrait Of The Generation
the reason for this task is to capture the person in a goofy side or a side they normally wouldn't show out in public, but with this they were allowed to show there emotions, and what makes this task so special they get to pick the photo they would liked published
in this task i was required to take photos of hughs face close just like what jr would do, which where like goofy faces of himself and then make him pick the photos he liked the most
After this i allowed to choose the photo he liked the the vast majority of it to reveal his character
the way this is similar to the task of jr, is that we did the same as him as we posted up a photo of what the person wanted with paper just like jr would of done
this was a really interesting process. i enjoyed taking the work out of classroom and experience the tiny bit of what JR does.
Gordon Magnin
Los Angeles-based artist, Gordon Magnin, generates occupation so that a total response to his environment. Magnin lives in a town so that visually influenced by celebrity and Hollywood advertising.
Gordon Magnin’s artwork offers a new perspective of a extremely traditional subject issue in an very refreshing way. The artist largely utilises found female fashion images. He imposes geometric systems (normally triangles or squares) on the lofty fashion faces, either by cutting them out of the images and replacing them on a new angle, or simply by removing the shapes completely. It's no surprise that the artist’s educational background is in engineering and architecture, which gives more info about his use of geometric structure.
Magnin says: “I was born and elevated in Reno, Nevada. I grew up skateboarding and receiving in trouble. I studied structural engineering and architecture in college. I love to brew my own beer. I’m a Virgo so I’m attractive organized and a little of a perfectionist. I’m technically inclined, bu

My Response
Heres my take on the task
This is before the editing was done
I did a similar thing to Gordon Magnin and distorted the face.
I really liked how it spiraled out, giving a effect of depth. i found editing this task to be easy and tried to add many shapes within shapes so it would look complicated. before i started editing i should of adjusted the brightness better and contrast
Kehinde Wiley
Kehinde Wiley utilises the poses and props seen in old-fashioned portrait painting.
He finds his models on the streets of New York and asks them to pick up a portray they wants to emulate.
Occasionally Wiley already has an thought of the portray he want to copy in terms of the composition love the example on the left.
These two works are set against one another so as to reuse how ideas of race, masculinity, representation, power, and agency have played out across the history of Western portraiture.

in these pictures my editing is successful. i found it easy to make the right choices about edit in. i focused on editing the face with the flowers but left enough to recognise the person. there's a good balance.
Fragments of a building
Cornillet is a painter, not a photographer. In this series, he has painted architectural elements isolated from their environment and reconstituted in the form of objects on a white background. The concrete makes us aware of the material and of the remains left by the humans and of time passing by.Even if the architectures seem austere, spaces seeming uninhabited, dehumanised, Cornillet creates a particular poetry and a mesmerising mysticism.
My Response
i really liked how this task turned out and how i was able to focus on the curved wall. it could of went better if i added more in the building in the task, i got rid of too much
Mauren Brodbeck
this photographer normally makes building that people walk by into actual interesting building by editing them out into colours, which makes them stand out.
i hated this task at first, because we had to use the polygonal lasso tool and it kept selecting the wrong thing. However the edit frames the building beyond giving the image a depth
Thomas KellnerKellner shows us segments of one building which create one distorted image . His photos don't deconstruct but reconstruct the building in a different way.
In this series, he focussed on world landmarks. We can recognise these famous places even though they look different. Using just one roll of film, Kellner repeatedly takes photographs of the same landmarks and buildings to arrange in a contact sheet. |
Slide Show of images and screen grabs of the editing process.
Standing opposite the music block meant that i was able to photograph the building head on. i manage to divide the building equally into 12 sections, it could of been better if the exposure was consistent across all my images
Anastasia Savinova
Genius Loci explores the individual and the spirit of a place. Each paintings consists of several photos of homes unique to an area. These work stability among documentary and fiction, real and imaginary spaces, and grow to be keepers of the reminiscence and the spirit of the place.
Include examples by Savinova here.
My response
This task was fairly hard bcs u had to get the right photos with the right camera quality or the windows would end up looking like a pixel mirror, but otherwise the task turned out good, it could of even went better if i had taken the photos of my area which would had better quality and looked better and more unique
Two Strands
Strand 1: Nicholas Kennedy Sitton
My Response
This is by far one of my favourite tasks to do due to it being slightly challenging and the way the photos have turns out are really good, and i love the area that i took the photo in
Strand 2: Edward Weston
My Response
I photographed the objects on a black piece of paper, lit by two lights.
Best Edits
These were my best edits. I used a tripod to reduce camera shake and I made the photographs grey in photoshop to make it look more like Weston's work.
Development 1
In this development, I combined the work that I did in response to Sitton and Weston. I rephotographed fruit etc using low light then manipulated a part of the image by rotating shapes, within shapes.
This worked well but I want to try other objects. Perhaps the images are a little too dark.
Development 2
In this development, I looked at other objects. I wanted to use pale objects and change to natural lighting as the images before were too dark. I also tried to combine other objects in a way that you wouldn't expect to see them.
The reason why I positioned it like this was to show the skull and the shell from an angle. This made the Sitton style of editing more strange as this was straight on.
Development 3
In this development, I took inspiration from traditional still lives. For example, the two images on the right are examples of 16th century, still life painting. Objects that were used in these still lives were:
platters, candles, books, glasses, fruit etc. |
Willem Claesz Heda, Banquet Piece with Mince Pie, 1635
|
Willem Claesz Heda, Still life with rummer, pewter plate and peeled lemon. 1634

I feel I successfully copied the set up of traditional still lives. However, not all the objects were the right sort of object- like the jug. The Sitton editing technique is only just visible- I like that you don't see it straight away.
In my next set I will try to use more appropriate objects.
In my next set I will try to use more appropriate objects.
Development 4
In this set I have used better objects. I have also added two different types of material to add more interest to the background.
Edits of the still life.
Edits with the Sitton twist technique
Traditional still life painting has common objects like skulls, fruits or book which makes up these type of photos. I have used these but made it more contemporary by digitally editing part of the picture.
In this way i have combined the two photographers, Edward Weston, and Kennedy Sitton.
Final Piece
with this task this is my final piece as i fully did what i have done
in these 2 photos i secretly hid circles which make the photo slightly distorted the photos and slightly made the photo more dark using burn tool
